Are we losing the grip? Are we falling down with our depression, our troubles in life?
If yes, then here’s a story that would give you a push towards good again, in sha Allah.
Did you know that among the hundred tribes that came to enter the fold of islam, there was this one tribe from the Arabian peninsula that was and is a very great example of firm faith and strong belief?
Yes, there was, the Banu Mazeenah, a tribe that lived near Al Madinah on the road which linked up with Makkah.
Why do I say they are firm believers of Islam? Well, after the passing away of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam, many tribes turned apostate (renounced their belief) of Islam. Such tribes bluntly refused to pay zakat, but this Mazeenah tribe, subhan’Allah, they remained as firm as a mountain in their faith and belief in the tenets which are the five pillars of Islam.
They continued to pay Zakat, observed the obligatory prayers five times a day and adhered faithfully to the Sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam. They neither panicked nor faltered in their steadfastness; doubt and disbelief did not enter their hearts even for a moment.
With this, Allah Azza Wa Jall did bless this tribe the leadership of one of the greatest Muslim general that Islam ever had, in the person of Nu’man Ibn Maqran Radiyallahu Anhu!
Let me tell you the story of this beautiful day of Islam.
When bedouins learnt about the religion of Islam speeding among neighboring lands of Al Madinah, 400 warriors came to their chieftain, Nu’man Radiyallahu Anhu and told him, after moments of deep thinking, he said:
"Brothers, I have made a firm decision to set out for Al Madinah early in the morning and those of you who wish to accompany me on this auspicious journey is welcome to join me."
At dawn, Anu’am Radiyallahu Anhu was pleasantly amazed to find all his brothers and the 400 warriors ready to embark on the journey with him.
There had been no rains and a famine in the region, and the means off income had dwindled and were very limited, yet in spite of all these problems, Nu’am Radiyallahu Anhu collected many very expensive gifts to express his sincere love and regard for the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam.
When this caravan arrived in Al Madinah, they caused such an unusual stir in the city, imagine the quantity of these people filling up the streets of Al Madinah just for the purpose of accepting this religion! Subhan’Allah.
This was such a breathtaking sight, and whenever I try to imagine it with my mind, my tears just start to fall down!
So when the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam learnt of their arrival he went out and greet them. Nu’am Ibn Marqam Radiyallahu Anhu, together with his nine brothers, Sanan, Suwaid, ‘Abdullah, ‘Abdur-Rahman, ‘Aqeel, Na’eem, Mardhi, Dharrar and 400 warriors swore allegiance to Islam, simultaneously!
It was worthy of being seen and experienced!
When this happened every eye was filled with tears, and the face of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam was radiant with joy. The faces of the Sahabah Radiyallahu Anhum were all glowing with happiness.
Wallah, this event was so great that Allah Azza Wa Jall loved it so much that an ayah was revealed, and the moment was immortalized in the Qur’an for all time. This ayah is:
"And of the bedouins there are some who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and look upon what they spend in Allah’s Cause as means of nearness to Allah, and a cause of receiving the Messenger’s invocations. Indeed these (spendings in Allah’s Cause) are a means of nearness for them. Allah will admit them to His Mercy. Certainly Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most merciful." 9:99
Subhan’Allah! The love and regard of Banu Mazeenah to the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam and the religion of Tawheed, Al Islam, belief in Allah Azza Wa Jall was just so incredible!
These people had golden hearts, in spite all the sufferings and famine they faced, they still managed to spend for the cause of and to attain nearness to Allah Azza Wa Jall and to receive some invocations from the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalaam, subhan’Allah when most of us can’t even try to pay a small amount to attend an islamic lecture or to spend for the cause of Allah. Astagfirullah.
Are we the likes of those tribes who when calamity came to them, renounced their belief and turned away and became enemies of islam? Or are we likes of the people of Banu Mazeenah, that in the face of famine, sufferings, sorrow, we would stand firm as mountains and continue to pursue the rewards of Jannah?
Our actions may not be so great that Allah Azza Wa Jall would reveal an ayah for us, but know that you every deed is written and seen by Him and he will give the duly reward or punishment for each.
So with this we pray with such beautiful words:
”Allahumma ya Muqallib al Quloob thabbit qalbi ‘alaa Deenik,”
O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your Religion.
